Not fewer than 22 pupils of Ogba Junior Grammar School, Lagos, fainted in the school, on Thursday.
Residents of the area were shocked beyond words as the incident was allegedly caused by a gaseous chemical substance which the students inhaled.
The teachers were not left out as they joined some students and flee from the scene.
Some of the teachers rushed some of the students to Blue Cross Hospital, Ijaiye Road, Ikeja.
A security man at the main gate of the school told LEADERSHIP that the incident occurred around 1pm.
He said he was by the gate when he perceived an offensive smell and blocked his nose with his handkerchief.
The Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, blamed it on the laboratory located in the complex.
He said 22 students were unconscious, LASAMBUS was able to revive most of them and their parents took them away.
"Four were still unconscious and had been taken to Blue Cross Hospital. We were able to trace the ordour to the complex which shares a fence with the school. We spotted the laboratory where the smell was coming from and the place has been cordoned off. Investigations are still on. We must get to the root of the matter," he assured.
